A number of Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) are offered to international students from low income countries or developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because suitable educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Reach Oxford Scholarships (UK) are offered to international students from developing countries to pursue undergraduate program at the University of Oxford, UK, for 2012-2013 academic year.

Other criteria:	This scheme is only suitable for candidates of the highest academic ability who have outstanding examination results. 120 Swedish Government Scholarships for International Developing Country Students

The Swedish government administers a number of scholarships each year for international students and researchers coming from developing countries to pursue their educations at a Swedish university. The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from the countries listed below. About 120 scholarships will be awarded for studies in Sweden, starting in August 2012. The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees.

Please note that in order to apply for a Swedish Institute Study scholarship the student must first be admitted to a Swedish university/university college. The application period for study programs opens 1 December, 2011.

The application period for Swedish Institute Study scholarship will be March 14-25, 2012.

Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden starting in the fall semester 2012 (August) and focus mainly on master’s level. A few scholarships will be awarded for studies at bachelor’s level.

Who is eligible?
The scholarships are intended for students from the above-mentioned target group for full time studies in Sweden. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Scholarships cannot be granted for students who:

Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
Have a Swedish permanent residence or work permit.
Have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at Master’s level or for research at a Swedish university.
Already hold a Master’s degree from a Swedish university/university college.
Are currently enrolled in a study program on Bachelor’s or Master’s level at a Swedish university or university college.

How to apply for a scholarship (See the link below)

Prior to applying for a scholarship, the student must first apply for a study program at Master’s or Bachelor’s level via www.universityadmissions.se, an online application service for study programs in Sweden.

About 600 different study programs at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship. The programs have been selected by the Swedish universities and cover a wide variety of study areas. The list of eligible study programs can be found here.

As soon as the results of Swedish university admission have been published at www.universityadmissions.se, the online service for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships will open. Please note that only admitted students can apply for a scholarship. The scholarship application period will be March 14-25, 2012. A list of successful candidates will be published at www.studyinsweden.se and www.si.se in mid-April.

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 8,000 per month.

The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in the fall semester 2012 (August) and is granted for of one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that the study results are satisfactory.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study program period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study program at a Swedish university.

SI Network for Future Global Leaders

All Swedish Institute scholarship holders are invited to become members of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders – a network that offers unique opportunities during and after the stay in Sweden. Together with other talented people from all around the world, the scholarship holder is able to take part in a variety of events, exchange ideas and create networks that benefit both to career and personal development.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 10.000.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Danish Government Scholarships for International Students

Denmark warmly welcomes highly qualified and motivated students from all over the world. A number of scholarships are therefore offered each year by the Danish Ministry of Education to fund students from countries outside the European Union/ European Economic Area. Scholarships for students from outside the EU/EEA for studies at Academies of Professional Higher Education and University Colleges are administered by the individual institutions.

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements are aimed at highly qualified exchange students and young research scientists wishing to immerse themselves in studies of the Danish language and culture or other fields of study related to Denmark.

Scholarships are offered to exchange students and young research scientists from higher education institutions in the following countries:

- 19 EU-countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Spain, and the Netherlands

- Iceland, Switzerland, Serbia and Turkey

- Non-European countries: China, Japan, Israel, Egypt and Russia

Scholarships are only available to master’s and PhD-level students and young research scientists. However, bachelor’s degree students wishing to study Danish language and literature can also apply if they have studied the Danish language for two years.

Purpose

Funding for the Cultural Agreements is gathered into a single scholarship pool for both the long-term scholarships and for the Danish summer language courses. The twenty-three countries gathered into the same funding pool are not guaranteed an exact number of scholarships. China, Japan, Israel, Egypt, and Russia, however, are an exception and each maintain a separate funding pool. When applications are reviewed, the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation carries out an individual assessment based on certain selection criteria, detailed below.

Selection Criteria for Long-Term Study Scholarships

In order to ensure that the most qualified candidates are nominated for a scholarship under the Cultural Agreements, the scholarship committee has defined a set of criteria for the assessment of applicants. While the successful candidate does not necessarily need to meet all criteria, applicants who meet several criteria will have a better standing in the selection process than applicants who do not.

Please note that only master’s students, PhD students, and young research scientists can apply for scholarships. However, for studies in Danish language and literature, bachelor’s level students can apply if they have studied Danish language for two years prior to when they wish to start their stay in Denmark.

In the selection process, the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation will give priority to candidates:

Who motivate their choice of a specific research programme or field of study through its relation to Danish language, culture or other Danish areas of expertise. Successful applicants will describe the Danish dimension in their choice of studies or research when applying in fields such as: design, music, architecture, welfare, environmental studies, etc.

Who are nominated by a lecturer who teaches Danish in their home country. Applicants should include a reference from the lecturer in their application.
Who study Danish or Scandinavian languages and literature.
Who refer to an internationally acclaimed lecturer at the desired Danish host institution with whom they would like to study.
Who have contacted the desired Danish host university and received an invitation from a lecturer to conduct studies or research there.
Who study at a partner university or institution of the desired Danish host university.

Please note you are ineligible for a scholarship if:

You are already enrolled or planning to enroll in a full degree, joint degree, or double degree programme in Denmark. Full, joint, and double degree students are not considered exchange students and are ineligible for scholarships.

You are not currently enrolled in, or conducting research at, an institution of higher education in your home country.
You intend to pursue studies at a bachelor’s level during your stay in Denmark in fields other than Danish language and literature.
You plan to conduct studies or research on a part-time, rather than a full-time, basis.

2012-2013 Taiwan Government Scholarships for International Students

2012-2013 Taiwan Scholarship Program for International Students to study in Taiwan. Taiwan Government Scholarship for foreign students to study undergraduate, postgraduate, Master, PhD, Postdoctoral in Taiwan. In an effort to encourage outstanding international students (excluding students from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau) to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world, the Ministry of Education (MOE) establishes the following guidelines for the Taiwan Scholarship Program.

The Ministry of Education of Taiwan MOE awards outstanding international students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Taiwan by awarding each recipient of the Taiwan scholarship the following:

(i)Tuition and payment of academic fees, including credit fee . Upon validation of tuition and above fees, the MOE awards each recipient per semester up to NTD40,000. If the total amount of these fees should exceed NTD40,000, the remainder of all costs shall be covered by either the recipient, or the recipient’s college, whereas over NTD40,000 are the sole responsibility of the recipient. Tuition and academic fees do not include any of the following: administration fees, thesis advising fees, insurance premiums, accommodation, Internet access, all of which are payable by the recipients.

(ii)Subsistence allowance:
The MOE offers each recipient undertaking undergraduate studies a monthly stipend of NTD15,000; it offers each recipient undertaking postgraduate studies a monthly stipend of NTD20,000.

Duration of Scholarships:

(i)The maximum period of each scholarship is four years for undergraduate programs, two years for master programs, and four years for doctorate programs. The maximum length of the total awards for each recipient undertaking a combination of studies is five years.

(ii)Annual award periods begin on September 1st and continue until August 31st of the following year. Recipients must arrive in Taiwan and enroll at their admitting universities/colleges within this period unless delays have been approved by the relevant institutions and the MOE. If recipients fail to arrive in Taiwan for registration during this period, their award will be revoked with no deferrals.

(iii)Subsistence allowances begin from the month of the recipients’ registration at the universities/colleges and end when the award period expires or upon the recipients’ graduation, withdrawal, suspension, expulsion, or revocation of the scholarship.

Eligibility:

(i)Applicants must be a foreign national ( international students )with a high-school diploma or post-secondary degree(s), with an excellent academic record, and be of good moral character.

(ii)Applicants are ineligible if they meet the following criteria:

1.Are R.O.C. nationals or overseas Chinese students

2.Are already registered or have obtained student status at any university/college in Taiwan. Graduating students pursuing further studies are exempt from this rule.

3.Have already studied in Taiwan for the same level of degree as the one in which they currently intend to enroll.

4.Are exchange or dual/joint degree students admitted in accordance with academic cooperation agreements between local universities/colleges and international universities/colleges.

5.Have been a recipient of the Taiwan Scholarship for over a total of five years.

6.Have had, in the past, their Taiwan Scholarship or Huayu Enrichment Scholarship from the MOE revoked.

7.Are recipients of any other scholarship or subsidy offered by the Taiwan government or education institutions in Taiwan. This excludes subsidies offered by universities/colleges to cover tuition and other fees exceeding the scholarship limit.
(iii)Applicants should apply directly for admission within the deadlines specified by each university/college listed in the “Association of Taiwan Scholarship Program Schools” (see Appendix 1). Applications for admission outside of the universities/colleges participating in the Taiwan Scholarship Program are automatically disqualified and will not be returned.

V.Applicants should send the following document within the period specified enclosed with their application to the nearest Taiwan Embassy or Representative Office in their country. Failure to include any of these documents renders the application incomplete, and the applicant will not be further considered for the scholarship, without further notice:

(i)Taiwan Scholarship Application Form (available at the nearest Taiwan Embassy or Representative Office)

(ii)A copy of the applicant’s passport or other nationality certificates.

(iii)A copy of the highest degree and academic transcripts. If issued by international educational institutions, these documents must be authenticated by an overseas Representative Office or be sealed and delivered by the awarding institutions. Documents in a language other than Chinese or English must be translated into Chinese or English and the translated documents must be authenticated.

(iv)A copy of admission application materials to universities/colleges in Taiwan (e.g., copies of application fee remittance, application form, receipt of application from universities/colleges, e-mails, ).

(v)A copy of a language proficiency certificate:

1.A copy of results or certificate for the “Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language” (TOCFL) Basic or above.

2.For applications to all-English programs, a copy of TOEFL test scores or other recognized English language proficiency exams or degrees awarded in English must be submitted. English-speaking nationals are exempt from this rule.

(vi)Two letters of reference, signed and sealed in envelopes (i.e. from the principals, professors, or supervisors). Photo copies and email submissions of letters of recommendation will not be considered.

(vii)Additional documents as specified by the individual representative offices.

VI.Quotas for scholarships offered by the MOE are contingent upon the MOE’s annual budget allotments for the coming year and each representative office’s yearly performance. The MOE notifies all relevant offices of the available quotas for the new academic year by December 31st of each year.

Application and Selection Process:

(i)Taiwan Representative Offices provide application information and establish selection requirements in accordance with these guidelines and directly process applications in coordination with local government agencies, schools, educational and cultural institutions. Scholarship application information (including selection criteria, scholarship types and quotas, application process, application period,) is provided in both Chinese and the local languages by January 31st of each year.

(ii)After Taiwan Representative Offices provide the aforementioned information, hard copies in Chinese and in the local languages and an electronic copy must be forwarded to the MOE’s designated offices for archiving purposes.

(iii)In principle, the application period is from February 1st through March 31st of each year. However, the actual application period will in accordance with dates provided by the local Taiwan Representative Offices.

(iv)For the application, the applicant must send all completed documents to the nearest Taiwan Embassy or Representative Office in his/her home country.

Selection Criteria:

(i)Recipients academic study goals should be consistent with Taiwan’s national development plans so as to assist in the growth of industry, economy and education.

(ii)Recipients should achieve an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above, and a postgraduate GPA of 3.5 or above (on a 4.5 scale). Where grade conversion calculation differs, Taiwan Representative Offices will base their conversion calculations on the aforementioned calculation guidelines to select outstanding applicants from prestigious universities/colleges.

(iii)Interviews must be conducted in person or by video conferencing so as to interact with the applicants and better judge their demeanor and moral character.

(iv)Priority will be given to applicants with a certificate in TOCFL-levels of: intermediate or above. For applications to all-English programs, a copy of TOEFL test scores or other recognized English language proficiency exams at the intermediate level or a test score of over 75% must be submitted.

(v)Applications must be complete in full. All incomplete applications are ineligible for consideration, and persons submitting incomplete applications will be withdrawn from the selection process without further notice.

(v)Recipients that are suspended, withdrawn or expelled from universities/colleges shall have their scholarship revoked and subsistence allowance suspended. When this occurs after the 15th of the month, recipients will not be required to return that month’s subsistence allowance. Tuition and other fees paid must be returned pro rata to the designated office by the MOE and processed and verified separately.

2012 European Erasmus Mundus Scholarships | International 2012-2013 Scholarships for International Students to study Undergraduate (BA, BSc) Postgraduate (MA, MSc, MBA), PhD (Doctoral Studies) and Postdoctoral Pprogram in Europe. AREAS is an institution-based mobility and scholarship project organized by a Consortium of some the most prestigious universities in Europe and Asia. AREAS allows you to live an invaluable experience by undertaking a study or research period in Europe. It is open to undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students and scholars and to academic staff. The project and the scholarships are financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 – Strand 1 programme.

The project is open to students and scholars from the Asian Countries targeted (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam) willing to spend a mobility period abroad in Europe for the purpose of studying, teaching, training and research.

You can apply to study and participate in this programme for an enriching experience on both a personal and a professional point of view.

Students and scholars can choose from a wide variety of academic fields at different levels of study (Undergraduate, Master, Doctorate, Post-Doctorate and Staff) at one of the European partner Universities. Scholarships will be given to applicants selected by the Consortium.
The programme finances the expenses engendered by the mobility, including travel costs, subsistence allowances, tuition/registration fees and insurance costs.

AREAS (Academic Relations between Europe and ASia) is an EMA2 project managed by a Consortium of partner Universities including 10 European Universities and 10 Asian Universities and it is coordinated by Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

The project gives students, researchers and staff from the Asian Countries targeted by the project (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam) the opportunity to study, do research, training or teaching in Europe for periods of different duration. 98 individuals will be given the chance to broaden their perspective by participating in academic mobility. The project does not provide support for mobility from Europe to Asia, nor among the Asian Countries.

Individuals may apply for mobility of different duration depending on the length of the course or programme offered by the host university. The academic offer includes exchange as well as full degree programmes.

Detailed information on available courses and their duration is given in the application form for each specific course and university.

IMPORTANT: All mobilities must begin before 31st December 2012 with the exeption of:

34 months Undergraduate and Doctorate mobilities that must start before the 1st September 2012;
Staff mobilities that can start in any time within the project duration and must end within the project eligibility period.

Scholarships

All applicants having completed the online application form will be evaluated by an academic commission at each host University and the best candidates will be selected for receiving a scholarship. The list of nominated candidates will be approved by the Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission.

Successful applicants will be awarded a scholarship which will cover a monthly subsistence allowance, travel costs and insurance. Participants will not be required to pay any tuition fees at the host university.

Once candidates have been selected for the program, before they start receiving their scholarship, they will be asked to subscribe a specific agreement concerning their duties and responsibilities.

Payments will be transferred to their bank account in Europe.

Subsistence allowance

For the duration of your mobility period you will receive the following monthly subsistence allowance:

Undergraduate	1,000 euro
Master	1,000 euro
PhD	1,500 euro
Post-doc	1,800 euro
Staff	2,500 euro

Travel costs and insurance

Your travel costs will be covered within the total limit of 2,000 – 2,500 euro. These rates are established by the European Commission on the basis of the linear distance between your location of origin and the hosting university premises.

The AREAS Consortium provide a full insurance coverage (health, travel, accident) to all the grant holders participating in the individual mobility activities.

Participation costs

Participants at any level will not be required to pay any fees or compensation (such as tuition and registration fees, additional library, students unions, laboratory consumable costs and language courses costs) to the host universities. Exchange students will continue paying their registration fees at their university of origin.
The tuition fees for students applying for a full degree program will be covered by the project.
The EU financing provides funds for participation costs that will be used by the Consortium to partly compensate the host universities for fees and other costs.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants need to meet a set of minimum eligibility criteria. Please verify your eligibility before applying. In case of doubt you can ask for clarifications to your Home University’s AREAS coordinator or to the project Coordinator.

Your eligibility will be checked on the basis of the documents that you will provide with your application, such as your CV, a motivation letter, transcripts of records, Degree certificates or other documents to certify the study level needed for the course or programme at the host university. Proficiency in the language of instruction and other documents will be required. For detailed requirements, please see the programme information at the host university you are interested in.

The eligibility status refers to the time when the mobility starts.

Before you apply, you have to identify the target group you belong to and support this with proof of your status.

Mobility flows for students and staff from Europe and between the Asian Countries are not eligible.

In order to be eligible for applying for the AREAS scholarships:

You must have the nationality of the Asian Countries targeted (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam).

You must not have resided nor have carried out your main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of the European countries at the moment of the submission of the application.
You must not have already benefited from a scholarship for the same type of mobility under another project under the EMA2-Strand1.
You need to comply with the Target group requirements, please refer to the table on the AREAS section.

Concerning the academic qualifications, you must meet the minimum requirements specified below. You must also have additional academic qualifications if required for the specific course or program you are applying for.

Undergraduate

You are eligible to apply if you hold a Secondary School Diploma. For Target Group 1 students it is also necessary to have completed at least 1 year of undergraduate university studies. Please note that specific courses or programs may have additional requirements.

Master

You are eligible to apply if you have finished your Undergraduate studies or have completed three years of university education. Please study each partner university website concerning the master programmes special requirements

Doctorate

You are eligible to apply if you have completed a Master program or have started your PhD studies already.
Please check the partner universities website concerning the Doctorate programmes special requirements.

Post-Doctorate

Your post-doctorate activity abroad can consist in research, training and/or following highly specialized courses.

You are eligible if you hold a Doctorate degree.

Staff

Staff mobility is open to both academic and administrative Staff of partner universities. The staff exchange constitutes a one-way visitor flow from the Asian Countries targeted (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam).

Staff undertaking a period of teaching, training or research in a partner University must:
1. work in or be associated to one of the participating institutions;
2. be fully integrated into the Department or Faculty of the home institution.

This scholarship aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of The Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in development-related fields. APU was selected as a new designated institution by ADB in 2010, and will provide the scholarship to a few eligible applicants to APU’s Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies (GSA) each year.

Eligibility

(1) Major Field of Study: The applicant must apply for one of APU’s GSA master’s programs, however, the IMAT Program does not qualify for this scholarship.
(2) Nationality and Residence: Applicants must be nationals of ADB developing member countries. (See www.adb.org/Countries for a list) Applicants living or working in a country other than their home country are not eligible for this scholarship.
(3) Age: Applicants must be not more than 35 years of age at the time of application.
(4) Professional Experience: At least two years of full-time professional work experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application.
(5) Educational Background: The scholarship will, in principle, not support applicants to pursue a second master’s degree.
(6) Income: Family income should not be more than US$50,000 per year and individual income should not be more than US$25,000 per year.
(7) Obligations: Recipients of this scholarship should agree to return to their home country after completion of studies under the Program.

The University of Edinburgh will offer 2 Master’s scholarships covering the overseas rate of fee for students from less developed countries and 2 Master’s scholarships covering the “home” rate of tuition fee for UK/EU students for eligible Master’s programmes offered by the University.

Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent.

2012 Chevening Scholarships | 2012 Chevening Scholarship Awards for International Students to Study in the United Kingdom (UK). Most scholarships for study in the UK are funded by the British Government and are paid to another government for its students, either directly or through an organisation such as the British Council. Initially you should contact your own Ministry of Education or Education Department, which will have details of most schemes and will also be able to advise you on your own government’s conditions for studying abroad. In addition, you should contact the nearest British Council office in your country, which should give you details of relevant scholarship schemes. If there is no British Council office, then contact the nearest British Embassy or High Commission.

The British Chevening Scholarships 2011-2012 | 2012-2013 | 2013-2014

Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion and academia. Most scholars undertake a one year master’s degree.

British Chevening scholarships are awarded to extremely able students wishing to follow full-time, postgraduate or second degree courses or full-time research in a UK institution. Awards may be for study in any subject field. Preference is given to postgraduates and those already established in a career. Awards, which may cover all or part of the costs, are usually given for formal courses of postgraduate study but may be given for shorter vocational or research courses.

Award details for Chevening Scholarship

The total value of a Chevening Scholarship varies a little according to the applicant’s country of origin. The Scholarship comprises the cost of the Overseas tuition fees; a monthly maintenance stipend; one return air fare from the applicant’s country of origin; and an allowance for necessary books and materials.

Who should apply ?

Chevening Scholarships are for high calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. Applicants should be:

Motivated to make a career that will take them to positions of leadership in their own country within ten years of their scholarship
Able to use their studies and experience in the UK to benefit themselves, their countries and the UK
Natural influencers and talented communicators, with energy and ambition
People who value networking and who can demonstrate the value of networks to their studies, and to bringing about change on a global level
Intelligent, with demonstrable academic potential
Strong characters with integrity, drive, and the ability to self manage and work independently

Applicants must:

Have good English language skills with and should check what IELTS score or equivalent is required for admission to postgraduate courses
Meet the academic requirements for their courses of study

Applicants cannot be:

A UK or EU national.
An employee of the FCO (including British Embassies and High Commissions), the British Council, a co-sponsor or sponsoring UK university, or their relatives, or former employee who left such employment within the past two years.
People who have already received financial benefit from an HMG-funded award.

How to apply ?

There is no coordinated global launch of the programme. British missions around the world will advertise Chevening separately, so timings will vary. Some Embassies will advertise as early as late autumn, while others will start as late as spring.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from outside the UK to pursue a full-time graduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The University of Cambridge is normally ranked in the top three universities worldwide. It typically receives over 9,000 applications for graduate study from non-British applicants, approximately 1,700 of whom take up their place at Cambridge.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships | UK Scholarships | British Scholarships 2012-2013 are awarded on the following criteria

intellectual ability
leadership capacity
a person’s desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others
a good fit between the abilities and aspirations of the applicant and what the University of Cambridge can offer in its graduate programme

While at Cambridge Gates Scholars pursue the full range of academic disciplines and are spread throughout all 31 Colleges.

All applicants for the scholarship apply for – and must gain – admission to the University of Cambridge

Scholarship Value

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge.

Core components

the University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate*
a maintenance allowance for a single student (£13, 000 for 12 months at the 2011-12 rate; pro rata for courses shorter then 12 months)
one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course

Discretionary components

The Trust considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

Family allowance – up to £7,775 for first child and up to £1,200 for second child; no funding for partner
Conference attendance – up to £500 p.a (must be presenting)
Fieldwork – Scholars may apply to keep up to their normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of their PhD
Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars – termly maintenance allowance reduces per term for up to a year**
Hardship funding – where there are unforeseen difficulties

*The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees.

** The PhD at Cambridge is a three year degree and Gates Scholars should are take on a research project that they and their supervisor think can be completed within three years. However, if there are unforeseen circumstances which means a Gates Scholars requires further funding during all or part of their fourth year, the Trust will consider an application on a discretionary basis. But Scholars should not rely on receiving any fourth year funding at the beginning of their PhD.

Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship: the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance to Gates Scholars who are in receipt of a salary from their employer or a substantial other scholarship while a Gates Scholar.

Eligible Candidates

Candidates for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship:

may be citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom
may apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study:
- PhD (three year research-only degree)
- One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
- MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
may apply to study any subject available at the University of Cambridge
must be admitted to one of the degrees above at Cambridge through the University’s normal admission procedures – the Trust does not admit students
must be applying for a new course of study or research if they are already a student at Cambridge – e.g. those who have already started their PhD are not eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship
who are – or have been – in receipt of a Gates Cambridge Scholarship may apply for a second scholarship; such candidates must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates

Standard applications (via the Board of Graduate Studies)

All applicants apply simultaneously for admission as a graduate student to the University of Cambridge and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship using the one application pack.

To be considered for graduate admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship most applicants will need to submit all of the following documents to the Board of Graduate Studies by the relevant deadline:

2 academic references
1 personal reference
English language test scores if your first language is not English
Any other documents required for admission to the course – e.g. research proposal, example of written work etc. (see the individual department/course website for details)

Interview Process

All candidates shortlisted for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship attend a 20 minute interview.
The interviews may be in person, by Skype or by telephone and are conducted by a panel of four members (a representative of the Trust, two academics and a Gates Cambridge alum) who are knowledgeable in a general way about the candidate’s field of study.

Candidates are asked about their work: why it excites them; what they know about the broader field of which it is part; why it is important; why coming to Cambridge will help them with their research or build on their earlier educational experiences. Also, do they understand that higher education brings privilege and opens opportunity for the future; what do they intend to do with the benefits they’ve had; how do they see themselves contributing in time. Candidates may also be asked questions of a probing intellectual or ethical dimension, to which there are no ‘right’ answers.

Interviews for US citizens normally residing in the USA are held in the USA at the beginning of February for entry in the following October. Interviews have been held in Annapolis, MD and in New York City in the past; in early February 2012 the interviews will be held in San Francisco, CA. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted before the Christmas break. Most candidates interview in person, but candidates who cannot attend an in person interview may interview by Skype or telephone.

Interviews for citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally residing outside of the USA are held in Cambridge in late March. About half of these candidates interview in person, while the other half interview by Skype or telephone (given their location). Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in early March.

All candidates are informed of the results of their interview within a week.

Application deadline: 2 December

Applicants should submit their application no later than midnight (UK time). The Trust cannot guarantee that applications submitted after the deadlines will be considered.
